How this list is built
  • Production per minute: last season, plus the season before at lower weight, plus this preseason (lightly for veterans). Small samples lean toward the average for the position.
  • Minutes: last season's minutes, nudged by this preseason. Preseason counts more for players on new teams and rookies, less for established starters, who often sit early. Each roster has to add up to about 240 minutes, so crowded teams lose minutes and teams that lost players gain them.
  • Sharing the ball: a team only gets so many shots. Last season teams used between about 108 and 118 shots, trips to the line and turnovers a game. When a roster's players add up to more than a busy team really uses, everyone gives some back, the main scorers a bit more, and nobody more than 18%. Their scoring drops with the shots; their efficiency doesn't change.
  • During the season: what a player is actually doing counts more with every game. Minutes and role catch up within a couple of weeks; production per minute moves more slowly so a hot or cold week doesn't swing it. Games he has missed count against his availability. Values are for the rest of the season.
  • Games: share of games played over the last two seasons, capped at 78. Missed games are filled by a waiver-level player, so missing time costs you but doesn't zero a player out.
  • Age: a small nudge. Players 21 and under get up to 6% more production a minute, tapering to nothing by 26; from 30 it goes the other way, down to 7% less at 36 and up. Players 32 and older also lose a few expected games.
  • Rookies have only a few preseason games. Their numbers lean hard on the average for their position and draft slot, so treat them as rough.

Last season, this preseason and 81 games of this season so far. Projections, not promises.
